When it comes to rebooting an old television series, the idea sometimes work, but more often doesn't. We need to be careful on who or what we bring back from the dead.

Case in point, there is talk amongst Fox executives to bring back Joss Whedon's epic action/horror series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, starring Sarah Michelle Geller.

During the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, Fox TV group Chair Gary Newman said "I think if you look in our library, 'Buffy' is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back,"

The idea to reboot or revive the series is a slippery slope. You can either take a bite and revive a series with the original stars like Fox did with the X-Files, Prison Break and ABC's Roseanne. Or, you can reboot a series with an all new cast like 24, American Idol and the upcoming Greatest American Hero.

No doubt, there is still a risk on the success of the show.

Fox is being careful where they tread with so much at stake for 'Buffy', as they decided to leave it up to it's series creator, Joss Whedon. He and will decide whether or not he wants to make the return trip back to Sunnydale.

"It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with," Newman said. "When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen."

Reboots and revivals, Newman says "aren’t actually a focus" for Fox. He acknowledges revivals do have its advantages when it comes to what's on television. "I think more than anything it's a marketing opportunity," he said.

"People are aware of the show, you don't have to build awareness. If the show’s beloved, you get a great deal of intent to view right from the get go." Newman adds. "But it has to be done with a legitimate sense of purpose. If you do it cynically, if you don’t have a great creative reason to do it, I don’t think it’s going to work."

ABC temporarily silenced the naysayers when the latest revival of an iconic Fox series, American Idol made it's network debut on Sunday. The show reached over 10.34 million viewers, the biggest Sunday night audience since 2012.

On Saturday, the original cast of Buffy The Vampire Slayer celebrated the show's 21st anniversary since it aired.
